![]() ![]() Can a player turn off the 3D and still get a complete experience? Yup. ![]() Does it use 3D to the game’s benefit? In general yes and at times, hell yes. One of the very best games available for the 3DS? Check. Then I scanned the mental checklist of requirements for a 5 out of 5 score: high quality game without serious flaw? Check. But I feel kind of weird about slapping a perfect score on a port/re-release that just isn’t done. I reviewed DKCR a couple of years ago and dug it. And there’s also co-op mode, so two 3DS owners can quest together locally. Original Mode is still there, though, for purists and masochists. ![]() Returns 3D includes a so-called New Mode, which gives you extra health and access to helpful cheat items which makes the game less punishing and more accessible, and arguably enhances the overall experience by balancing the frustration/satisfaction scales a bit. But then experience that rush of awesome (and possibly high-five everyone in the vicinity) when you finally get through them.ĭonkey Kong Country Returns was famously – or infamously – difficult. And there are tough sequences which will push the limits of your skills, and possibly make you want to fire your 3DS at the wall. and I involuntarily snorted at the corny, evil crab pirate with an eye patch and a seafood fork instead of a hook hand. There’s signature Nintendo whimsy – sometimes you’re breaking stuff, and sometimes you’re stopping to blow the fluff from dandelions. There’s variety in modes of locomotion (riding rhinos, precision monkey-blasting from barrel cannons, jetpack piggyback, and hand-over-hand vine climbing) and terrific platforming design almost every step of the way. It smoothly changes gears between breakneck speedrunning sequences and slow, thoughtful discovery of cleverly tucked-away collectibles (some of which are just there for the compulsive completionist in you, some required to access hidden levels.) More important than its retro appeal was that it just got everything right. and most other side-scrolling platformers of the last console generation. But for negotiating tricky platforming sequences, buttons and gamepad generally just work better.) For that reason, along with industry-wide retro platformer fatigue, Donkey Kong Country Returns was largely overlooked, despite that it was a better game than New Super Mario Bros. By 2010 when it was released, serious gamers were kinda over the Wii, and getting forced to use motion-based controls for run-and-jump basics (swinging a sword or a tennis racket? Sure. Nearly everyone knows Donkey Kong, but not a lot of gamers know that Returns was one of the better platformers of the modern era. With new levels, a more manageable difficulty mode and control tweaks, the 3DS version becomes the definitive version of the game, a must-buy if there’s a 3DS in your house, and one of the more cleverly designed and rewarding platformers of the last decade or so. But unlike other ports, Returns 3D is superior to the original. It paid homage to the universally beloved mid-90s Donkey Kong Country franchise, made by noted developer Rare, Ltd.ĭKCR3D (whoa, that’s almost a word) was ported by Monster Games (which until now, made mostly racing games) and is like other 3DS ports in that it brings stereoscopic 3D graphics and some new content to the table. Yes, it’s a port – Donkey Kong Country Returns, made by Retro Studios, the pedigreed developer best known for the Metroid Prime series, originally dropped in 2010 for the Wii. Are chimps even monkeys? He’s a chimp, right? Who can say for certain? The point is, Donkey Kong is pure OG badass, and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is now available for Nintendo’s 3DS handheld. It wasn’t mean-spirited, it was just monkey business. And occasionally abduct a plumber’s wife. He needed to run, jump, pound the ground, recover stolen bananas. and then as the vigilant Diddy Kong caregiver and driven, singleminded savior in Donkey Kong Country cast the steroid-addled chimp in a new light. mocking you.īut then his poignant, vulnerable portrayal as the captive in Donkey Kong Jr. Kidnapped Mario’s girl, tried to kill him with barrels, bared those weird, gapped teeth. ![]()
